Lighting is one of the easiest ways to transform a room, and it’s also one of the most common upgrades we get asked about. The two most popular options — LED downlights and LED strip lighting — solve different problems, so here’s how to pick the right one.
LED downlights: the everyday workhorse
Downlights are the go-to for general room lighting — kitchens, living areas, hallways, bathrooms. They’re recessed into the ceiling, give even, functional light across a space, and modern LED downlights use a fraction of the power (and last far longer) than the old halogen downlights still found in a lot of older Brisbane homes.
If your home still has halogen downlights, switching to LED is one of the fastest ways to cut your power bill — halogens run hot and burn out fast, while LEDs use around 80% less energy and can last well over a decade.
LED strip lighting: the finishing touch
Strip lighting is about atmosphere and detail rather than raw brightness. It’s what makes a kitchen island glow from underneath, highlights a feature wall, runs along a hallway skirting board, or adds a soft wash of colour behind a TV or bedhead. It’s flexible, dimmable, and — for a lot of homeowners — the difference between a room that’s “fine” and one that actually feels considered.
So which one do you need?
Most homes end up wanting both, just in different rooms:
- Kitchens & living areas: downlights for everyday brightness, strip lighting under cabinets or shelving for atmosphere
- Bathrooms: downlights for practicality, with an optional strip around a mirror or vanity
- Bedrooms: downlights on a dimmer, with strip lighting behind the bedhead if you want a softer evening feel
- Outdoor entertaining areas: a mix of both, depending on layout
Getting it done properly
The main thing that separates a good lighting install from a mediocre one is planning the layout properly before anything gets cut into the ceiling — spacing, dimmer compatibility, and circuit design all matter. Get it planned right and it’s a one-day job that changes how a room feels for years.
